Setting a Sustainability Blueprint with Commonwealth Rolled Products

Published on May 10, 2024

Challenge

Commonwealth Rolled Products (CRP), a Kentucky-based manufacturer of aluminum industrial products, sought external expertise for the development of its inaugural sustainability strategy and reporting efforts. CRP was formed after its predecessor was acquired by American Industrial Partners in 2020, which brought new capabilities and increased potential to serve its clients. As part of CRP's focus on re-establishing its position as a North American leader in aluminum production, the company aimed to address key sustainability topics relevant to the aluminum industry.

CRP partnered with dss+ to provide guidance on a sustainability strategy that is aligned with its overall business goals, and to develop its inaugural sustainability report, thereby increasing transparency and accountability. As part of this, dss+ worked with the client to create a data collection system that would enable long-term performance improvements across its business units.

dss+ Approach

dss+ began the engagement with a materiality assessment that included an in-depth analysis of customers, suppliers, competitors, key stakeholder interviews and a deep-dive into ESG certifications and ratings. These efforts helped dss+ identify and prioritize issues that Commonwealth needed addressing.

The second phase involved gathering material for the development of CRP's 2022 Sustainability Report, the first of its kind for the company.

The information and data compiled from the project team was evaluated and used to create a professionally designed sustainability report. This provided CRP leaders and stakeholders with helpful insight on the current state of various sustainability and operational initiatives within the organization, along with an outlook into the company's future trajectory.
