Getting Safety on Track at Genesee & Wyoming

Published: 2016

When Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) approached dss+, they were going through multiple acquisitions. North America’s largest owner of short line and regional freight railroads, G&W’s expansion created the need for leadership to shift their focus from financial performance to improving and controlling their safety culture.

In partnership with dss+, G&W unified multiple companies under one common safety philosophy through several safety programs. From leadership and employees to local communities, G&W and dss+ focused their efforts on everyone across the board.

The intricate safety program included safety leadership workshops, educating local communities on grade crossing awareness, monthly conference calls with senior leaders on safety, safety training classes and processes, and regular safety audits.

The program was a success, resulting in significant safety achievements for G&W, including a 70% decrease in injuries. G&W became five times safer than the average U.S. short line railroad, and operates with a safety performance that is two times better than the Class 1 average.

G&W’s vision is to be an injury-free company. In partnership with dss+, G&W is on the right track towards setting the gold standard for safety performance in the railroad industry.
