Key Highlights from the TIP Report 2024:
- Raising the bar in responsible sourcing
TIP members have doubled their ambition in responsible sourcing, with 80% now setting timebound targets for all materials, compared to just 40% in 2021. This commitment is reinforced by a significant increase in supplier engagement: 70% of members have embedded these sustainability targets into their supplier contracts, up from 50%, and 30% have completed third-party audits to validate their progress. These advances are driving greater transparency and accountability throughout the global tyre supply chain. - Accelerating decarbonisation and resource efficiency
The sector has made substantial progress in reducing its environmental footprint. TIP members have achieved a 26% reduction in CO₂ intensity since 2021, a 2.3% drop in energy intensity, and more than doubled their use of renewable electricity, marking a 121% increase. Water withdrawals have fallen by 14%, waste intensity by 3.8%, and the proportion of sites with ISO 14001 certification remains high at 97%. Notably, the number of members with validated Science-Based Targets has increased to eight, reflecting a 167% rise since 2021. - Advancing inclusion and workplace wellbeing
Workplace safety and diversity are at the forefront of TIP members’ priorities. The proportion of sites with externally audited health and safety management systems has risen from 33% in 2021 to 59% in 2024, with overall audit coverage reaching 97%. There has also been a 9% increase in women among total employees and a 19% increase in women on Boards of Directors. All TIP members maintain public commitments to diversity and inclusion, highlighting ongoing efforts to foster more inclusive and equitable workplaces across the industry. - Leading scientific progress on tyre and road wear particles
TIP members have significantly expanded their contribution to scientific understanding of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP). The number of TIP-sponsored publications on TRWP has grown by 75% since 2021, reaching 28 in total, and citations have risen by 175% to 720. To further accelerate research and innovation, TIP launched an Open Call for Projects at the end of 2024, inviting new ideas and collaborations to address this emerging environmental challenge. - Pioneering sustainable mobility and digital innovation
The industry is embracing the future of mobility through investments in intelligent and connected tyre technologies, digital solutions, and awareness campaigns. These initiatives are designed to enhance road safety, improve resource efficiency, and support the transition to more sustainable transport systems, positioning TIP members at the forefront of digital transformation in the tyre sector. - Advancing circularity and end-of-life solutions
TIP members are driving the shift towards a circular economy by developing a comprehensive End-of-Life Tyre (ELT) Management Hierarchy and advancing new standards for ELT treatment processes and material and energy flows. These efforts are laying the groundwork for more sustainable recovery, recycling, and reuse of tyres, reducing waste and maximising resource value across the product lifecycle. TIP members are also actively collaborating on policy advocacy and research to support circular and low-carbon solutions.
