Process Safety Management reduces operational risks

Challenge
The world's largest producer of platinum, accounting for around 40% of the world's supply, had experienced visible reduction in workplace fatalities and incidents in the last decade. However, the leadership recognised the need to strengthen their focus to prevent potentially catastrophic incidents, with a robust approach to reduce process safety risk exposure.

Solution
dss+ was invited to launch a multi-year program aimed at building Process Safety Management capabilities and embedding PSM in core operational and business processes to achieve and sustain safer and more reliable operations.

dss+ conducted an initial risk-based diagnostic study to understand key risks across the platinum processing organisation's operations and the effectiveness of their technical systems and organisational capabilities. A 5-year PSM improvement roadmap was co-designed with the leadership team.

  • Reviewed ~250 process safety major accident hazards and the adequacy of 1500 critical controls, across 20 high-risk areas
  • Reduced operational risk exposure through 950 risk reduction actions and specific initiatives
  • Enhanced core PSM technical systems such as Asset Integrity, Process Safety Information and Process Hazard Analysis
  • Engaged 150+ employees in critical roles across sites, to raise process safety risk awareness and embed behaviours
