Case Study: Coal Producer Cultural Transformation

Published: 2020

CHALLENGE

The operator of two underground coal mines in Australia, two coal preparation plants and a port sought to achieve lasting improvement in health and safety, unit cost of production, productivity and capital spend. With 2,500 employees and contractors, the company knew it had to radically change the prevailing culture in the organization to bring about sustainable improvements.

SOLUTION

An initial four-week diagnostic by DuPont Sustainable Solutions (DSS) revealed US$424 million in net cash improvement opportunities, US$109 million in cost saving opportunities and identified areas where performance could be stabilized to drive safer, more reliable and efficient operations.

A 12 month transformation journey established a performance driven culture which fostered continuous improvement across the organization.
